ALBERTINA WALKER “QUEEN OF GOSPEL” TO BE HONORED AT 1st ANNUAL GOSPEL LEGENDS BALL SATURDAY, MAY 24, 2008
During the 22nd Bi-Annual Gospel Industry Retreat (IGIR) Weekend, MARS Community Development will host the first ever Gospel Legends Ball honoring the incomparable Dr. Albertina Walker, The Smiling Jubilaires of Fort Lauderdale, Brother Sullivan Pugh, and Evangelist Rosa Shaw, on Saturday, May 24, from 6 – 11 pm at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa located at 3555 South Ocean Drive, Hollywood, FL 33019.
In 1951, Walker founded her gospel musical group, The Caravans, which launched the careers of iconic gospel musicians such as Inez Andrews, Shirley Caesar, Evangelist Dorothy Norwood, and the “King of Gospel” Reverend James Cleveland, among others. After a stellar career with her group The Caravans, Albertina went on to phenomenal success as a solo artist, recording her first project Put A Little Love In Your Heart in 1975. To date, she has recorded 71 albums, including hits such as the gold selling “Please Be Patient with Me,” “I Can Go to God in Prayer,” “The Best Is Yet To Come, Work On Me,” and “Joy Will Come.” Walker still enjoys an active recording career, often lending her talents to the projects of other artists, in addition to her own.
Partial proceeds from the sale of tickets for the 1st Annual Gospel Legends Ball will benefit the Gospel Complex for Education & Preservation that will be developed in Lauderhill, FL. In addition the public is invited to attend the historic Ground Blessing Ceremony for the Gospel Complex site on Sunday, May, 25, 2008 at 3:00pm located on the northwest corner of State Road 7 and Sunrise Blvd.
Tickets for the Gospel Legends Ball are $100 each, or you can purchase a South Florida Resident Package for $150, which includes entry to the Legends Ball, Where the World Meets Benefit Concert featuring Jonathan Butler and CeCe Weans, Praise on the Beach Memorial Day Family Picnic and Concert, and the Dr. Bobby Jones Show Monday Tapings.
