Mary Mary- Their New Video Sparks Controversy

May 5, 2009 · Print This Article

EEWMagazine.com (The Essence of the Black Christian Woman) posted an article about the controversy surrounding Mary Mary’s new video for “God In Me”.

Has Mary Mary gone to far? Check out the video, read the article and let me know what YOU think! Some of the responses:

People must realize that God’s message can be interpreted and communicated in many different ways. Everyone doesn’t respond to traditional Gospel and Mary Mary, Kirk Franklin, Kierra Sheard, DA TRUTH and other contemporary artists has the ability to save lives with their music.

Church people can be so judgmental sometimes. I’m not saying it’s right to have rappers in a gospel video but I am saying that we have to be careful about judging people’s motives and intentions.

Most of them are outraged about “sinners” appearing in the video, but as Christians, are we only supposed to mingle and associate with other Christians? If that’s the case, then most Christians certainly wouldn’t have approved of the lifestyle of Jesus CHRIST. He ate and fellowshipped with sinners in order to help win them over. What if Mary Mary is doing the same thing? We just need to think about it that’s all.

I read the article in EEW Magazine and I have to say I think Mary Mary went overboard this time. I love the girls but I disagree with them BIG TIME on The God In Me Video!

Christians are so weak. All the protests on this and other sites about how easily our “souls” are tarnished by this song are ridiculous! Many Gospel artists include secular artists in their videos-sometimes to have street cred and other times to prove that Jesus really DOES love everyone. (Not true?) In any case, I wonder how many “church folk” protest Lil’ Wayne & others whose lyrics are detrimental to the Black community and women?

Regardless, it’s a good video & in two years we’ll all be praising Mary Mary for this song-just like we did BeBe & CeCe when they first came out in the 90s and caused the same “controversy.”

I don’t see any thing wrong with them having the rappers in their video. Who are we to judge what a person’s life is like. Aren’t we suppose to love them into a life filled with Christ? I mean, what if being in this video will convict their hearts to change. We must remember that we are all sinners saved by grace!
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN GOD CALLED YOU?

Mary Mary have been pushing the envelope for a long time but this time they went overboard with It’s The God In Me video. As a pastor with a large youth membership who looks to Gospel singers as role models can get the wrong idea that is ok to do any kind of work for the money as long as you keep God in You. But you can’t put god down to go to work and then pick hime up again when you get home.

what’s important here is two things, one which is none of our business, the motive behind it ? let GOD deal with it. second we as christian most be careful that the things we do in front of weaker christian may be harmful to them more so than stronger christian.music is a very powerful, the hip hop culture is anti-christ
the (opposite).any man be in CHRIST is a new creature take off the old in with the new. you can’t serve two masters, luke warm. you either hot or you not. don’t confuse weaker christian that or trying to get out of somthing that is destroy or young people (hip hop) there is no place in CHRIST for hip hop.yes JESUS sat and ate with sinner , him came to set the captive free (hip hop) has our kids captive . the word of GOD demands change renewing of the mind and transformation, i’m not judging mary mary not my place only GOD can do that. GO BLESS

I strongly agree with the first comment.
If we’re true Christians then what’s wrong with following Jesus
He didn’t conform to the world or accept what it had to offer for the
sake of reaching them. That’s pure compromise!!

Jesus, He set a true standard of Holiness. That we must uphold in everything we do for him. Where is the difference anymore???
We’re trying so much to please the world by singing, dressing, and living like them. Is it really for the sake of souls being saved or dollars being made

A lot of these gospel artist start out so humble and annointed. and a few years and records later. You listen to the melody and wonder if their R&B or Hip-Hop. We’re in the last days and people are becoming so blinded by the cares of the world.

I am a pastor and someone informed me yesterday that they went to a strip club and heard the song being played there and that was sacreligious and yes Jesus did associate with sinners but he never had them preaching till they were converted and you certainly never heard them preaching in a strip club. The music is a minstry and so is the word of God. Certainly both are created to draw but neither is meant to be spreaded by someone that is not worthy. Singing does not convict you the word of God is word convicts and convinces you. Just humming, rapping, singing a song can convict you.
There has to be a seperation between the holy and unholy. No man can serve 2 masters. No one no matter how talented should be appauled for crossing line and striving to blurr the line. If you could tell me that one of the rapper changed their lives and converted to sing gospel after performing with M/M on this video then I would say it was ordained by God but what it did was provide the devil with a way to encourage people to share the line witht the enemy.
DON”T BLURR THE LINE because in the end GOD IS CERTAINLY NOT GOING TO COMPROMISE>

Praise the Lord!! As for me and my comment, I strongly agree with the comment that was made in reference to pro-gospel singers starting out with their eye on the prize(JESUS) and somewhere down the line the publicity, money, and whatever else takes places caused them to take their eyes off the prize(JESUS). That’s why we need his HOLY SPIRIT!!! The HOLY SPIRIT to LEAD you and GUIDE you to all that is TRUE AND OF GOD!!!

    James 4:3-5 (Amplified Bible)

3[Or] you do ask [God for them] and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [when you get what you desire] to spend it in sensual pleasures.

4You [are like] unfaithful wives [having illicit love affairs with the world and breaking your marriage vow to God]! Do you not know that being the world’s friend is being God’s enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world takes his stand as an enemy of God.

5Or do you suppose that the Scripture is speaking to no purpose that says, The Spirit Whom He has caused to dwell in us yearns over us and He yearns for the Spirit [to be welcome] with a jealous love?(A)
